Ideal Weight Assessment

Understanding WSAVA Body Condition Scoring

The WSAVA 9-point BCS is the international veterinary standard for canine body composition assessment. Unlike weight alone, BCS evaluates actual fat distribution — making it breed-agnostic and far more clinically meaningful.

📌 BCS Quick Reference

  • BCS 1–3: Underweight — increase calories, consider vet check
  • BCS 4–5: Ideal — ribs felt easily, clear waist visible
  • BCS 6–7: Overweight — reduce calories 15–20%
  • BCS 8–9: Obese — veterinary weight-loss programme recommended

Common questions about this calculator and canine nutrition.

Use the WSAVA Body Condition Score (BCS) system: feel your dog's ribs (should feel easily without pressing hard), view the waist from above (should be an hourglass tuck), and observe the belly profile from the side (should tuck upward). A BCS of 4–5/9 is ideal.
Most medium dogs (10–25 kg) have an ideal weight in the 10–22 kg range, but this varies by breed, frame size, and sex. BCS is more clinically meaningful than weight alone — a muscular 24 kg Border Collie and an overweight 24 kg Beagle are very different cases.
Safe weight loss is 1–2% of body weight per week. For a 30 kg dog, that's 300–600g/week. Faster loss risks muscle wasting and nutrient deficiencies. Reduce daily calories by 20% and increase gentle exercise while monitoring BCS monthly.
A BCS of 4–5 on the 9-point WSAVA scale is considered ideal, corresponding to approximately 20% body fat. Ribs are easily palpated with a slight fat covering, a clear waist is visible from above, and a mild abdominal tuck is present.
Yes. Most pet supply stores and many veterinary clinics allow free use of pet scales. At home, stand on a bathroom scale holding your dog, then weigh yourself alone and subtract. For small dogs, digital kitchen scales work well.
