Body Condition Assessment

BCS vs Body Weight — Why Condition Matters More

Two dogs of the same weight can have dramatically different health statuses. The WSAVA BCS evaluates fat cover, muscle mass, and body contour directly — giving a far more accurate picture of your dog's true body composition than the number on a scale.

BMI & Body Condition Calculator — FAQ

The WSAVA 9-point BCS is the international veterinary standard for assessing canine body fat percentage. A score of 4–5/9 is ideal (~20% body fat). Each BCS point above or below ideal represents approximately 10–12% deviation from ideal body weight.
Yes. Two key checks: (1) Rib palpation — run your fingers firmly along your dog's ribcage. You should feel individual ribs without pressing hard, but not see them. (2) Waist check from above — a healthy dog has a visible hourglass tuck. Our calculator guides you through both.
Weight alone can be misleading across different breeds and frame sizes. BCS evaluates actual body fat distribution directly, making it breed-agnostic and more clinically meaningful. A lean 30 kg Greyhound and an obese 30 kg Labrador have very different body compositions despite identical weights.
